Executive summary
* The results of a trial of a drug for pancreatic cancer (daraxonrasib) have just been published. The drug was compared with chemotherapy “of the investigator’s choice“.
* The primary outcome was median survival time. The median overall survival was 13.2 months with daraxonrasib and 6.7 months with chemotherapy. Results were accompanied by headlines that daraxonrasib doubled life expectancy, which those results do indeed show.
* I found no errors in the paper to flag. Instead, I used the paper to research some points about cancer generally and this new drug specifically. These points included Why is pancreatic cancer so deadly? Was it right for the trial to include patients who had received prior treatment? How many participants were lost along the way? What was the incidence of adverse effects?
* The trial was funded by the developers of daraxonrasib. Analysts estimated that the drug could be worth a few hundred thousand dollars for each patient.
* The review of this drug led me to think about the research that I would like to see if I were diagnosed with something as brutal as pancreatic cancer. That’s for next week.
Introduction
My uncle and a female friend died from pancreatic cancer. Both were in their 50s. It is one of the most brutal cancers – usually giving barely a few months of life following diagnosis. Those are not quality months of life either, as it is an extremely painful and debilitating condition. Some people opt to try anything; others opt not to have treatment, as they don’t really see the point.
