About 100 friends, relatives and community members gathered Sunday to mourn a 9-year-old Brooklyn girl tragically killed in a massive fire.

Mourners laid flowers, balloons and teddy bears outside 9-year-old Payton Thompson’s Brownsville home, where the blaze spread quickly to the top floor of the three-story building in which she was sleeping Friday morning, according to family members and fire officials.

The victim’s mother Regina Thompson broke down crying Sunday as she recounted her daughter’s last text message.

“She was so sweet. She was so smart. She would text you on any given day, at any given time, [saying] ‘I love you,” said the grieving parent.

The little girl’s last text to her mom said, “Mommy, I love you so much,” according to Thompson.

“I brushed it off because she [texted] so much, not knowing that would be the last time my baby would ever be able to tell me she loved me,” she said.

The three-alarm fire began around 5:20 a.m. inside the home on Howard Ave. near Blake Ave., according to the FDNY. The cause was under investigation as of Friday.

“The initial call was for an odor of smoke,” Deputy Chief James Carney previously said. “When we arrived, there was heavy fire on the second floor.”

A mourner lays flowers in memory of 9-year-old Payton Thompson at a prayer vigil outside the family's home on Howard Avenue in Brooklyn, New York City on Sunday, January 15, 2023.

Payton, the last of the residents removed from the building, was taken via ambulance to a hospital, but couldn’t be saved.

Her uncle Joseph Thompson said the family was going through a “rough, rough time.”

”The kind of pain that we feel is unparalleled to anything that I could ever think of,” he continued.

”Our lives have been changed forever, our hearts have been broken. There’s a void there that is absolutely irreplaceable.”
