Latest Casino Proposal Includes Giant Ferris Wheel and Hotels in Midtown Manhattan
Soloviev Group has partnered with Mohegan for the latest bid to build a casino in New York City. The announcement comes as a result of the New York State Gaming Commission’s Request for Applications to develop and operate up to three casinos in and around NYC.
Soloviev Group owns the site, which was part of a former Con Edison power plant, just next to the United Nations Headquarters. It is located between East 38th and 41st Streets, and between First Avenue and the East River.
Mohegan is an extension of the Mohegan Tribe of Indians of Connecticut and is the owner, developer, and manager of eight premier integrated entertainment resorts in the United States, Canada, and Northern Asia.
The casino is part of Freedom Plaza a mixed-use project planned at a waterfront site in Midtown. In addition the mostly underground casino, there will be 1,200-room hotel, two residential towers, a museum dedicated to democracy and four acres of green space with a massive Ferris wheel.
The immediate surrounding area is largely undeveloped in terms of real estate, providing an opportunity for access without undue disruption. Connected to the Franklin D. Roosevelt East River Drive and numerous bus stops, Freedom Plaza is a short walk from the 34th Street ferry and Grand Central Station. The development team will also explore providing additional dedicated ferry service.
This is just the latest casino proposal for Manhattan, in addition to a possible location in Times Square, Hudson Yards, and 5th Avenue. Other proposals for in and around NYC include Coney Island in Brooklyn, Willets Point in Queens and Nassau County in Long Island.
