A former Wake County principal and the wife of a high school football coach died Tuesday, more than a week after she was shot at her home.

According to the Wake Forest Police Department, Ericka Lucas, 56, died from her injuries in a shooting on Aug. 29 at her home on East Nelson Avenue.

Lucas was the former principal of Rolesville High School. She left the school in 2015. She is also the wife of Wake Forest High School football coach Reggie Lucas.

Sierra Smith, a former student of Lucas’, said she would remember how Lucas made her feel welcome in Wake Forest and how she was there for her when she needed someone.

“It was really hard being in Wake Forest as a little Black girl, and she made me feel comfortable, like I was ok, like I was safe,” Smith said. “She was really good at making someone feel like they were important.”

During their initial investigation, officers arrested and charged a 16-year-old with the shooting. Wake Forest police said Lucas was not the target of the shooting and was struck by gunfire meant for someone else on East Nelson Avenue. Police added that it was not a drive-by shooting.

Wake Forest police arrested Dexter Lamont Mills, 18, on Tuesday. Police charged both Mills and the 16-year-old with murder.

Officers said their investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information related to the shooting is asked to call 919-435-9610.
