WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – 22News is learning more about the victim critically injured in a wrong-way crash involving a driver who was allegedly involved in a police chase on Wednesday.
Family and coworkers have identified the victim as an employee at the Marriott Residence Inn. They say the victim was less than two miles from work Wednesday morning when their car was struck head-on along Route 5.
Their coworkers are now rallying as the victim faces a long and difficult recovery. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover medical and rehabilitation expenses. According to the fundraiser, the victim suffered life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition.
The driver who allegedly struck her vehicle has been identified as Carlos Maldonado, 37, of Springfield. According to Holyoke Police, Maldonado drove the wrong way down Route 5 during a police chase that started in Holyoke.
Police say Maldonado got out of the vehicle and tried to run away after the crash, but officers were able to arrest him. A stolen firearm was recovered at the scene.
Maldonado faces at least 16 charges in connection with Wednesday’s incident and is expected to be arraigned at a later date.
