Explosive used on Eastern Bank ATM in Woburn, police say

Police are searching for a man who tried to blow up an ATM at a bank drive-thru in Woburn, Massachusetts.

Officers responded shortly after 9 a.m. Thursday to Eastern Bank on Mishawum Road after a report of tampering with the machine. They found damage from what appeared to be a pipe bomb or other destructive device.

The Woburn Police Department requested help from the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Boston Division, which responded with special agent bomb technicians.

Authorities determined that a man placed an object on the ATM early Thursday morning, quickly leaving the bank. The device that was placed detonated moments later.

No one was injured, police said, adding that the man is at large. The FBI is taking part in the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call 781-933-1212.
