CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) — With all the rain we’ve been seeing recently, and continue to see it is good to know which areas are prone to flooding. The 22News Storm Team is Working for You to let you know where you could see flooding during heavy rain times, and some tips incase you find yourself in them.

Areas that are mainly in valley locations are at the biggest risk. Just like here in the Pioneer Valley. Low lying areas, like places at the bottom of a hill. Since that is where all that water is going to pool up. Underpasses as well can pool up with water if the drainage system gets clogged, or if the road goes in a small dip underneath one. And places near rivers and streams could have potential flood risks with higher amounts of rain.

If you find yourself in those areas you should never drive through a flooded road. You never know how deep that water is. It only takes 6-inches of water, if you’re standing, to sweep you off your feet. At 1-foot of water will float most vehicles. 2-feet of water, especially if it’s rushing, can carry most vehicles, including an SUV. So don’t think you’re too tough for these waters.

You can end up losing control if it floods up high enough. Do not try and drive around barricades, find another way around. Remember: Turn around, don’t drown!
