Elmhurst teacher honored for passion and support

ELMHURST, Ill. (WGN) — English teacher Isador Parrini says it took awhile for her to wise up and listen to her parents. Both were educators and encouraged her to pursue a career in education.

29 years later, she’s relieved she eventually embraced a path she calls extremely rewarding.

Parrini finds joy in every day at York Community High School in Elmhurst, no matter the challenge.

“Even on a bad day, in the back of your mind, you’re like, ‘This too shall pass,’” she said. “But freshman are really joyful in class.”

And you see it in this freshman honors class, genuine interest and curiosity in their young faces.

“They are on the edge of something. They are coming out of middle school and they are on the edge of what is coming next,” she said. “They are not jaded…happy…joyful…they are curious and they are just a lot of fun.”

It’s that love of teaching that inspired sophomore Liam Resendez to nominate his freshman English teacher. He says her class opened his world to the power of and love for reading.

“I started really liking books,” he said. “I like what the books are trying to tell you.”

Howard Ankin of award sponsor Ankin Law presented Isadora with $1,000.

Parrini says she has found so much support in the York High School community.

“There is a spirit here of helping one another and I feel that is true,” she said. “I feel like anyone in the English department or the school would help me anytime that I needed it.”

Parrini tells us she plan to use the money to buy more books and build a library in her classroom.
