DUTCH FLAT, Calif. — Amid a Blizzard Warning shutting down Interstate 80 in the California Sierra throughout the weekend and causing thousands to be without power, the community of Dutch Flat were able to brave the storm for a good cause.
The town, at 3,000 feet in elevation, was slammed hard by the blizzard… but that didn’t stop the community from meeting for a speakeasy fundraiser to send kids on an all expenses paid skiing trip once the weather settles.
“For some of these kids is the first time that they ever get to experience snow,” said Brandy March, an organizer of the event.
The fundraising event Saturday will directly benefit 90 kids from the Alta Dutch Flat Elementary School, allowing them to go on a ski trip in Soda Springs.

The event was nearly ruined by the weather as power poles were damages by gusty winds, leaving residents in the dark overnight. Luckily, things were fixed just before the event was held.
“This was planned months in advance, but you know what, Alta Dutch Flat Parents Club does not give up. We don’t surrender. And our kids are just that special that we will continue to do it,” said March.
The town hopes people continue to wait for the weather to ease up before attempting to trek up the mountain.
“Stay home. Don’t travel because driving is dangerous,” said event attendees. “It’s just safer to stay home where you’re not going to get stuck in a blizzard and lock up the roads.”
Interstate 80 closed late Friday afternoon and remained closed through the entirety of Saturday. It’s unclear when the road will reopen.
