Dulles Expo Center to close, IKEA opening in its place

The Chantilly event space will close after its last event of the year.

WASHINGTON — Dulles Expo Center will close at the end of this year, making room for a new IKEA location in Chantilly.

The Washington Business Journal first reported that the IKEA was coming to the same address as the Expo Center in September, and now, it’s official — the event space will be shutting its doors for good.

After the final eight events planned at the Expo Center this year, it will be closing down. The last event will be Greenberg’s Train & Toy Show, on Dec. 20 and 21.

In a press release Thursday, IKEA announced the new nearly 110,000 square-foot store featuring more than 7,700 products. It will be the third traditional store in the D.C. area, joining stores in Woodbridge and College Park. There are also three smaller “plan and order” stores in the DMV. But though the new location will be bigger than the plan and order points, larger items such as beds and couches will only be available to order online for in-store pickup or delivery.

“We are thrilled to continue our expansion across the DMV to bring the dream of a better home within reach for more people across the country,” said IKEA U.S. CEO Javier Quiñones. “The opening of IKEA Chantilly highlights our commitment to bring IKEA closer to the many people and make it easier and more affordable to access our home furnishing products and solutions.”

IKEA said the plan is for the store to open in Spring 2026.
