Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) lambasted former President Donald Trump for not condemning Paul Pelosi’s suspected assailant and expressed concern about escalating political violence.

“President [Joe] Biden and Democrats have stood behind law enforcement and strengthening protections for those in public life. That’s what I think we should be focusing on in this moment, when leaders of both parties — but so far not President Trump — have decried the attack on Paul Pelosi,” Coons said on “Fox News Sunday.” Trump has not yet commented on the incident.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband was attacked in the couple’s home on Friday. The stranger asked, “Where is Nancy?” before hitting her husband in the head with a hammer. Paul Pelosi underwent emergency surgery to repair the skull fracture, which appears to have been successful.

After the attack on Friday, Biden said at the Pennsylvania Democratic Party’s Independence Dinner: “This is despicable. There’s no place in America. There’s too much violence —political violence — too much hatred, too much vitriol.”

While some Republicans have been quick to blame Democrats for the attack, Donald Trump has been silent.

The former president’s son, Donald Trump Jr., however, was vocal about the attack, writing on Truth Social: “Imagine how safe the country would be if democrats took all violent crime as seriously as they’re taking the Paul Pelosi situation.”

In a sharp contrast, some prominent Republicans have offered sympathy for Pelosi and condemned the violence. Former Vice President Mike Pence tweeted: “This is an outrage and our hearts are with the entire Pelosi family. ⁦We pray Paul will make a full recovery. There can be no tolerance for violence against public officials or their families. ”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell also tweeted: “Horrified and disgusted by the reports that Paul Pelosi was assaulted in his and Speaker Pelosi’s home last night. Grateful to hear that Paul is on track to make a full recovery and that law enforcement including our stellar Capitol Police are on the case.”

On Saturday, Nancy Pelosi issued a statement about the attack: “Our children, our grandchildren and I are heartbroken and traumatized by the life-threatening attack on our Pop.  We are grateful for the quick response of law enforcement and emergency services, and for the life-saving medical care he is receiving.”
