Deputies find nearly 100 ballots at Sacramento County homeless encampment

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office says 99 ballots for the special election on Prop 50 were found while clearing a homeless encampment.

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — Dozens of ballots for the special election on Proposition 50 were found Wednesday during a cleanup at a homeless encampment in Sacramento County, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the area of Elder Creek Road and Mayhew Road to clear a homeless camp that had been posted for cleanup a week before.

When deputies arrived, they found 99 ballots and other election items among mail discovered in the cleanup. The ballots were collected and returned to the Sacramento County Elections Office.

The recovered ballots were unvoted and being voided from the elections office, the sheriff’s office said.

In a statement, the Sacramento County Elections Office said:

“Today, the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office informed us that during a homeless encampment clean up off Mayhew and Elder Creek, they discovered 99 unvoted ballots for the Statewide Special Election.

The 99 ballots have been returned to Voter Registration and Elections where staff have voided them. Re-issued ballots will be sent to affected voters tomorrow.

If registered Sacramento County voters have not received their ballots yet, they should call our office so we can have a ballot re-issued.”
