The gavel was sounded several times on Thursday evening during a Deltona City commission meeting.One was when the vice mayor tried to bring up concerns over a nearly $1 million IRS tax bill he says the city owes.”There’s something that’s been going on in the city regarding the IRS,” Vice Mayor Jody Lee Storozuk said.Storozuk says he just learned from citizens two days ago about a $1 IRS bill the city owes. However, when he tried to bring it up during Thursday’s special council meeting, he got shut down.Storozuk and Mayor Santiago Avila Jr. went back and forth.”Vice Mayor Jody Lee, you’re out of order. This is a special committee meeting, we want to make sure we stay with the agenda item. So if there’s no other comments, the meeting’s adjourned,” Avila said.Deltona City Commissioner Maritza Avila-Vasquez had already told WESH 2 that the issue is in litigation and reminded the vice mayor, too.”There is a IRS bill that we owe to the IRS. We got letters from the last couple of years in this city. They’ve been basically not told to the elected officials and that’s a problem for all the people in the city,” Storozuk said.”I believe it. In this city, I believe if you told me they went into a diner and stole a knife and fork, I believe it. This whole system is crooked,” Deltona resident Richard Bellach said.When asked about how the city acquired a tax bill so large, Storozuk said, “It was something concerning a 1095-C, which has to do with insurance.”Storozuk says certain forms were not filled out properly. He confronted the city’s finance department and was told they’d been working on it for two years.”The only person that would be to blame is whoever is in charge of finance department and the city manager, they’re to blame,” Storozuk said.Interim City Manager Glenn Whitcomb told WESH 2 he did hire an outside attorney to handle the issue, but because the matter is in litigation, he cannot comment any further.Even the current city attorney can’t comment.”From what I understand, the city of Deltona is already on the hook right now and has received the letters saying, ‘If you don’t pay, we’re going to take over your bank account,” Storozuk said.Storozuk says he will bring this issue back up again at Monday night’s city commission meeting.
