DC Police investigating officer involved shooting in Northeast

The Metropolitan Police Department investigating an officer-involved shooting outside a Northeast D.C. nightclub.

WASHINGTON — The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating an officer involved shooting that unfolded early Sunday in Northeast D.C.

According to MPD, officers were called around 1:30 a.m. to the 1800 block of New York Avenue, NE after nightclub security reported a person making threats towards security. The suspect attempted to enter a nightclub with another person and started threatening club security over an entrance fee, including saying they would return to the nightclub with a gun. The suspect was reported leaving the scene in a car before officers arrived. 

As police were gathering information about the incident from club security, the suspect returned to the club, driving towards the entrance where the officers and security were standing. 

Officers ordered the driver to get out of the car but the driver put their car  in reverse and fled the scene. Officers than started to purse the suspect. 

After a while of searching for the suspect, the suspect returned to the nightclub. Officers, again, told the suspect to get out of their car. According to MPD, the suspect drove toward the club’s entrance before putting their car in reverse again — this time heading towards an officer. 

Another officer on one side of the car fired multiple shots at the car.

The driver sped away and crashed in the 3400 block of New York Avenue, NE. Officers found the suspect conscious and breathing, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. D.C. Fire and EMS transported the suspect to the hospital. 

No additional injuries were reported.

MPD says the suspect has been arrested for felony assault on a police officerand more charges may follow as the investigation continues. 

The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave. The case is under investigation by MPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau’s Force Investigations Team. The United States Attorney’s Office will also review the incident.
