Summer is fast approaching, and chances are, you’re already planning on how to cope with or take advantage of the hot, dry season. With the temperature on the rise, so does the demand to create a perfect playlist to match the weather and the summer mood in the air. So, here I’ve curated some of the best songs – from classic rock to indie pop – to add to your list.

Honorable mentions:

“Summertime” by The Sundays
“Avant Gardener” by Courtney Barnett
“Catch the Sun” by Doves
“Summerlong” by Kathleen Edwards
“Island in the Sun” by Weezer
“Summer Noon” by Tweedy
“Sunny Afternoon” by The Kinks

“The Falls” by Whitney
A charming track from Whitney’s debut album, Light Upon The Lake, that will surely lighten up your mood with its twangy guitars and soothing brass horns.

“A Summer Song” by Chad & Jeremy
Released in 1964 and the biggest hit from the British duo Chad & Jeremy, this nostalgic song about a man reminiscing about a summer romance is featured in Wes Anderson’s cult classic Rushmore.

“Dancing Days” by Led Zeppelin

A classic rock tune, which according to Robert Plant, is “about summertime and good things.” It appears on the 1973 album, Houses of the Holy, and was covered by various artists, including Stone Temple Pilots.

“Another Sunny Day” by Belle & Sebastian
The first single from the album, The Life Pursuit, this B&S track could be the go-to song that you’re looking for to brighten up your summer days.

“Feel Flows” by The Beach Boys
Thanks to Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous, I came to realize that The Beach Boys isn’t just about surf rock. Just like in the film, the song conjures up different memories and emotions.

“It Must Be Love” by Labi Siffre
If this song doesn’t lift your spirit up, then I don’t know what else could. Originally released in 1971, Madness did a beautiful ska cover version of the song a decade later, though it still pales in comparison to the original.

“Archie, Marry Me” by Alvvays
Whether you are doing household chores or driving out of town, you can never go wrong with this addictively catchy song from Canadian indie pop band Alvvays.

“Heavy Metal Drummer” by Wilco
The centerpiece of Wilco’s critically acclaimed album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, this wistfully melodic song is Jeff Tweedy’s ode to a bygone era of heavy metal bands.

“These are Days” by 10,000 Maniacs
Let Natalie Merchant’s lovely voice take your summer blues away with this quintessential feel-good song that encapsulates the joy of living the moment and appreciating life.

“Cemetery Gates” by The Smiths
Morrissey and Johnny Marr wrote this jangly summery track for the album, The Queen is Dead, about wandering through a graveyard on a “dreaded sunny day.”
