Dan Snyder mansion, donated to American Cancer Society, goes to auction in December

The former Commanders owner gifted the estate to ACS to be sold for funding for cancer research.

WASHINGTON — Dan Snyder’s former home, a $49 million riverfront mansion, is going up for auction next month, nearly two years after he and his wife Tanya donated it to the American Cancer Society.

The former Commanders team owner bought the estate in 2000 for $8.64 and listed it in February 2023 for $49 million. It was reduced to $34.9 million after six months but was taken off the market another seven months later and gifted to the the ACS. Now the Potomac, Maryland home is listed for $24.9 million and going to auction with starting bids expected between $7.5 and $11.5 million.

The nonprofit will use the proceeds from selling the French Chateau-inspired mansion for cancer research and supporting patients in 20,000 communities nationwide.

Bidding starts at 3 a.m. on Dec. 5 and closes Dec. 18. Early bids are being accepted.

The three structures — main house, guesthouse and staff residence — span more than 40,000 square feet and sit on 13 acres of private land right along the Potomac River. There’s a pool, professional theater, clubroom and wine cellar, plus 11 garage bays.

“We are incredibly grateful for the gift, and the generosity cannot be overstated,” Dr. Karen Knudsen, CEO of the American Cancer Society, said in 2024.

Tanya Snyder is a breast cancer survivor, and she and her husband Dan have supported the ACS for years. In 2013, she was named Mother of the Year by the ACS.
