Crystal River storm surge after Helene

CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. — Water made its way over a seawall and onto U.S. 19 in Crystal River after Hurricane Helene.

Spectrum Bay News 9 Sarah Blazonis reported just before 1 a.m. on the conditions affecting residents and businesses.

The area saw the storm come through in bands — strong wind gusts and heavy rain, then periods of relative calm.

The owner of Tipsy Tarpon on King’s Bay was making last-minute checks.

“We’re hoping, with the moves we made, we could just have a quick clean-up and be put back together,” said Chris Kofmehl. “But I know some other businesses around are not that fortunate, and certainly some other homeowners aren’t, as well. So, I feel for all of us.”

He said that during Idalia, flood waters came up to just under the bar.
