Costco gas station and car wash now open ahead of Jan. 23 warehouse launch at Baseline Marketplace

Costco’s gas station and car wash in west Roseville are open; the new warehouse and Baseline Marketplace retail project launch Jan. 23.

ROSEVILLE, Calif. — Costco will officially open its new west Roseville store at 5200 Baseline Road on Jan. 23, marking the most significant milestone yet in the long-awaited Baseline Marketplace development, which has been in the works for more than a decade, according to the company’s website.

The project is taking shape on roughly 80 acres at the corner of Fiddyment Road and Baseline Road; it’s the same site where a Costco warehouse is opening on Jan 23. However, the Costco gas station and car wash opened to the public on Monday evening.

However, the warehouse will now be joined by another 400,000 square feet of retail space anchored by Home Depot and Target, along with smaller retailers, drive-thru restaurants and a gas station.

Covenant Real Estate Group is developing that part of the property; the Roseville Planning Commission approved their application on Aug. 28.

Gary Gallelli, Jr., president of Gallelli Real Estate, which has been involved in the project since the inception, said the development represents a major milestone.

“We are thrilled to be working with the Covenant Development team to ensure the center’s successful completion,” said Gallelli, “With Costco already under construction, the additional anchors we are securing, and the strong tenant mix we have commitments from, Baseline Marketplace is poised to become a leading regional shopping destination for both Placer County and the greater Sacramento region.”

According to Greg Bitter, City of Roseville Planning Manager, the final buildout of the site will total about 560,000 square feet, less than the 2014 plan.

He said the reduction means potential environmental impacts, including traffic and air quality, will be lower than previously evaluated.

“The greater community in western Roseville has had a very positive reaction to this development and is looking forward to shorter drive times to the types of retailers that will occupy the Baseline Marketplace,” Bitter said.

Traffic mitigation is a major focus for the project. Bitter explained that as a condition of approval, the developer is required to widen Baseline Road to four lanes from Fiddyment Road to Market Street, expand southbound Fiddyment Road to six lanes, and install auxiliary right-turn lanes along the project frontage.

New traffic signals will be added at Pavilion Drive, Upland Drive, San Fernando Drive and at the Baseline/Fiddyment intersection.

“All traffic improvement measures are required to be completed prior to the occupancy of the first building in the Baseline Marketplace project,” said Bitter. “There is no phasing of traffic improvements; it is all being constructed with the first phase of the project. Costco alone is contributing over $16 million to ensure safe and efficient access.”

Bitter also highlighted the project’s support for alternative transportation.

“Roseville already maintains more than 110 miles of on-street bike lanes, and streets in the project area will include bike lanes and sidewalks for people bicycling and walking to the shopping center,” Bitter said.

He noted that a transit center is planned for the west side of the Baseline Marketplace project. Roseville Transit, which currently offers local bus service in the area, may expand services as demand changes, including on-demand rides within the city limits of Roseville.

“The overall project will generate fewer trips than the 2014 approval, so the additional drive-through fast food restaurant will not create any new impact,” Bitter said.

With construction underway and anchor tenants secured, Baseline Marketplace is poised to become a regional retail hub, reshaping shopping and traffic patterns in western Roseville while providing new options for residents to shop, walk, bike, and take bus transit.

The new Costco Warehouse and Baseline Marketplace project will be located at 5200 Baseline Road.
