GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. (WWLP) – A tragic accident claimed the life of a 20-year-old when his motorcycle collided with a moose on Route 7 in Great Barrington last Thursday night.

The Berkshire District Attorney’s Office states that on October 2 at approximately 10:34 p.m., a detective with the Massachusetts State Police was called to the Route 7 southbound lane in Great Barrington regarding a deadly motorcycle collision. The crash had reportedly taken place between the Great Barrington Recycling Center and the Monument Mountain Trustees Reservation parking lot.

When law enforcement arrived, they found a motorcyclist, 20-year-old Wyeth Curtis, and a moose lying on the pavement in the southbound lane. Initial investigation revealed that the moose had stepped into the southbound lane, where it was struck by the motorcyclist.

Both the motorcyclist and the moose died on impact. Two vehicles driving northbound also experienced a collision that was reportedly related to the motorcycle lying in the lane.

Our sister station WTEN spoke with the Berkshire District Attorney about the case. “I feel bad for the young man. He’s just 20 years old. You know, like I said, not doing anything wrong, had the right equipment on. He had all the motorcycle gear that would be appropriate. We ask people to do. Leather, everything like that, boots, a full helmet. He did everything we’ve asked people to do when they ride motorcycles, but nothing can happen, a tragic accident,” said Timothy Shugrue.

Curtis had been a beloved member of the Great Barrington community, working as the assistant manager at Berkshire Bike and Board since he was 14 years old. The community has been mourning his sudden death, with many expressing their devastation over the loss.
