Colorado Peaches women's senior softball team to hold 'end of summer bash'

DENVER (KDVR) — The Colorado Peaches women’s senior softball team is holding an “end of summer bash” at Lakewood’s Addenbrooke Park next week.

The event will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 26 and features a doubleheader softball game and postgame barbecue. A pre-game ceremony will start at 9 a.m., prior to “first pitch” at 9:30 a.m., the team said Thursday. The event is free and open to the public.

The Denver-based Colorado Peaches have more than 50 players ranging in age from 55 to 91 years old. The 75-year-old and up team recently won a bronze medal at the National Senior Games in Des Moines, Iowa, in July.

“The strength of our Club is the inter-age competition and the fact that our younger players inspire our older players, and our older players inspire the younger players,” said Heidi Muller, a player on the Colorado Peaches, in a statement.

In addition to the barbecue — which the team said will include traditional and nostalgic ballpark foods — summer fare and “peach-inspired treats” will be served during the event.

The event will also include, among other things, a tribute to Raquel Sánchez Bishop, a “beloved teammate, volunteer, and friend.”

The Colorado Peaches were founded by physical education teacher Chloe Childers and began competing nationally in the 1990s. The team said it is often referred to as “the oldest softball team in the country.”

“Each of us has a passion that allows us to put on a uniform and be together to play a sport that creates connectivity,” Muller said. “It’s important that we continue to share our message and our game across the generations and continue to reinforce the importance of healthy aging and living our lives to the fullest.”

Addenbrooke Park is located at 600 S. Kipling Pkwy., Lakewood. Attendees are advised to enter the park via Kipling Parkway and West Exposition Avenue.
