SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The city of Springfield is planning to expand Florian Park by acquiring nine parcels of land, a move that has already been approved by the City Council.
The expansion aims to provide more green space and playgrounds for the area’s youth, particularly benefiting the South End neighborhood, where eight of the parcels are located.
“It is a much-needed expansion,” said Thomas Ashe, Executive Director of Parks and Buildings for Springfield. “Those kids need it, so this is really going to give them a greater asset of green space and playgrounds.”
The expansion of Florian Park involves acquiring additional parcels of land to increase the park’s size. The ninth parcel, located in the Hungry Hill area, will be developed into a pocket park that will serve as a memorial for Hungry Hill veterans.
The law department is currently finalizing the acquisition of the parcels, with hopes to begin the expansion soon. Once completed, the expansion of Florian Park is expected to provide much-needed recreational space for the community, supporting both new and existing residents in the area.
