A video of a cat refusing to sleep in his own bed until it has been packed away is proving painfully relatable to pet owners online.

The clip, shared to TikTok under the handle luna_themeowdel, shows a British shorthair by the name of Luna driving his owner to distraction with his unusual sleeping arrangements.

Despite splashing out on a bed for Luna, he has so far shied away from lying down in his new sleeping quarters. However, in a frustrating development, he has apparently taken to sleeping in the bed once it has been packed away.

In footage that has already been watched 3.2 million times on social media, the kitty can be seen snuggling up on the bed despite it having been put away. It’s a situation that has forced the cat to squeeze itself into a noticeably confined space in order to enjoy the new bed.

The video showcasing the unusual setup can be seen here.

While Luna’s use of the cat bed is both bizarre and entirely impractical, there may be some method to her madness.

Cats are often drawn to enclosed spaces, particularly in times of stress. These spaces are thought to provide them with an opportunity to escape to a place of solitude away from any potential sources of agitation like humans or other pets.

The feline predilection for enclosed spaces was best showcased in a study conducted by researchers from the University of Utrecht that saw 19 cats arriving at an animal shelter get split into two groups.

The cats in one of the groups were given boxes during the period of acclimatization, while the others went without. The results showed that the cats that were able to hide away in boxes experienced “significantly less stress” and adapted to their new environment at a quicker pace than the other group.

By applying the findings of this study to the actions of Luna, it’s possible to conclude that the bed is a source of stress to the cat.

Yet, bizarrely, when seeking out an enclosed space to relax in, this particular feline, whether consciously or not, has ended up on the same bed.

Luna’s behavior was a source of much entertainment and discussion on social media, with other cat owners sharing tips from similar experiences.

KingTheCat said: “I’ve realized my cat doesn’t like his bed out in the open so I bought him a tent bed so he feels enclosed” with McKenzie adding: “Try a cat condo or tent! may like the cover over their head.” Tiktok..izzy felt it was “such a typical cat thing to do” while gerogiesgf33 lamented: “Why are they all like this?”

“Sometimes it’s not the bed that’s the problem, but the location,” dontknowhowtous commented while Cassafrass wrote: “My cat wouldn’t sleep in her bed until I put it on the table she likes to sit on to look out the window. I threw in a towel she’d been sleeping on and now it’s her favorite place.”

Newsweek has contacted luna_themeowdel for comment.
