ARVADA, Colo. (KDVR) — A man hailed as a “homeless hero” for saving lives after a deadly 2019 crash on Interstate 70 now needs help.

Darin Barton, who was unhoused when he was credited with saving people from the fiery crash in Lakewood, is creating a new life for himself. But thieves took the car he’s worked so hard to finally afford.

Barton told FOX31 he will never forget the tragedy he viewed from the guardrail on the I-70 off-ramp at the Colorado Mills Parkway exit.

“It still haunts me every day. I still watch that video every day. I just — it’s going to be that way for the rest of my life,” he said.

Barton has come a long way, managing to find a job and earn enough money to move into his own apartment and pay for a new car.

“I’ve been waiting two years for this car,” he said.

Darin Barton, who was homeless at the time, was credited with saving lives after a fiery Interstate 70 crash in Lakewood in 2019.

Thieves steal car: How to help in the recovery

His dreams were put on hold after the cruel act of thieves, who stole the 1995 Honda Civic from a parking lot near 64th Avenue and Simms Street on Feb. 2.

“Even though I’m doing better than I was four years ago, it’s really a hard hit for me,” he said.

Police found the car sitting in the middle of a Wheat Ridge street, but because the final paperwork for the sale had not been completed, it remains in a costly impound lot.

“We were about to put a head gasket on it, so maybe they blew the engine. That’s why it broke down in the middle of the road,” he said.

Barton said he will continue to strive for a better life, but without a car, it will be difficult. A GoFundMe is set up to help him pay the cost of the impound lot to get the car back as soon as possible.

He provided a direct message to those involved in the car theft.

“I pray that you understand really what you did, and the consequences for what you did you may not understand, but I hope that one day you find whatever it is that you’re looking for, and I hope that it makes you happy,” he said.
