COLONIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) — A Capital Region paramedic who was on vacation in Germany jumped into action after witnessing two women being harassed on the train. He was then slashed by the attacker who fled the scene. The Good Samaritan’s family lives here in the area, and they explained how they are handling this tragedy from here at home.
“Our other son saying, where are you? Why aren’t you answering your phone? You know, something has happened,” said Amy Rudat who recounted the day she found out her son John had been attacked and was in a German hospital.
“I called his phone a bunch of times and a doctor answered. And once I confirmed, you know, I was actually his mother, he picked up because it said mom was, you know, calling,” explained Amy. “It was both disturbing to, you know, get a doctor on the other end of the line, but also very helpful. And right away, you know, he’s like he’s in surgery, but, you know, he’s not dying or anything like that. So, once we knew that he was alive, like stable and alive, that was that was the biggest thing for us.”
German Police confirm John tried to intervene when two men were allegedly harassing two female passengers on the train. They said John was then attacked by one of the two men.
“I was concerned with his overall well-being and the safety, the injuries, obviously, from my medical background was something that I was first and foremost concerned with,” said John’s father Chris.
Police said the suspects fled the scene, but one man was detained while the other man was reported to be still on the loose. “Our minds run, but we try to control our thoughts to the best of our abilities and stay strong for our child and hope that things will not be so catastrophic that our imaginations can run wild with them. So, it’s important to rein that in,” explained Rudat.
Amy said John has always wanted to see the world, which is what led him to Germany. “When Jonathan was in high school, he wanted to study abroad. He applied for the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange program.”
His parents said that he was accepted into the exchange program and then headed off to Germany for the 2022-23 school year. “That year abroad, he fell in love with Germany. He fell in love with the city of Dresden. Dresden, as far as he is concerned, is the best city in Germany. He loves the people. He loves the culture. So, he was going back.”
John had just recently launched a modeling career and was building his portfolio, “All in all, it was gaining a tremendous amount of traction prior to this incident. So, we’re hoping that, you know, it’ll continue to pursue in a positive manner and that his modeling community will support him.”
There is a GoFundMe set up by family members to help John on his journey to healing.
