Ignorance ‘foiling medical cannabis use’

Medically prescribed cannabis use has been legal since 2018, but increasing numbers of patients are wrongly being arrested thanks to ignorance of the law, experts say.
A recent paper published in the International Journal of Drug Policy blames the “UK government’s lack of implementation of medical cannabis legalisation”, combined with inadequate funding, bureaucratic supply problems and poor training for doctors and police. The situation “is producing multiple harms to people who need cannabis medicine”, according to researchers.
The warning comes in the wake of talks between Mamedica, a UK medical cannabis clinic, and the National Police Chiefs’ Council over revising policing guidelines to prevent the wrongful arrests of patients. As part of the proposed guidelines patients would have to carry identification and an up-to-date prescription
“hashtag Cannabis has opened the door for a whole new area of law,” … and “The cannabis lawyer is here to stay,” – Sean Hocking, founder of the Cannabis Law Reports, tells @TimesLaw, as lawyers warn of wrongful arrests of patients taking the drug on prescription.
