Gitanmaax has its own cannabis store.

In a ceremony Jan. 26 that showcased the intersection of cultural celebration and economic development, the Gitanmaax Development Corporation (GDC) cut the ribbon on its newest business venture dubbed Gitxsannabis.

“The event was a true celebration of our cultural values and a significant milestone in Indigenous economic development,” said Floyd Krishan, director of operations for the corporation.

It is not just another cannabis store, however, Krishan said.

“Gitksannabis, a venture of the Gitanmaax Development Corporation, is a strategic move towards stimulating economic growth within our community, providing jobs, entrepreneurial opportunities, and avenues for self-improvement for our 2,500 members, including nearly 700 residing on reserve,” he said in an email to The Interior News. “The economic impact extends beyond our community, contributing positively to the broader regional economy.”

The venture was made possible by the “unwavering support of the Gitanmaax Band Council,” but also received assistance from the Indigenous Cannabis Business Fund (ICBF).

The ICBF is a provincial program under the provinces New Relationship Trust (NRT).

“The intention of ICBF is to address gaps in capacity and funding to support diversity and equity in the legal cannabis space that is inclusive of Indigenous communities and businesses,” the NRT website states.

Gitksannibis is located on Willow Drive in Hazelton and is open to the public.

“We are thrilled to welcome the public to Gitksannabis, offering a diverse selection of strains and cross-blends of Sativas, Indicas, and everything in between,” Krishan said.

He added the store stocks bud, hash, shatter, oils, gummies, fizzy drinks, and more, as well as, rolling papers, dab pens, bongs, pipes, and grinders.

The store is open Sunday and Monday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. and the rest of the week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
