BURLINGAME, Calif. (KRON) — A two-alarm fire displaced about a dozen residents in Burlingame after it broke out in an apartment building at 16 Highland Ave. on Tuesday morning.
The fire, reported around 9:30 a.m., started in a kitchen and spread to the attic, prompting a significant response from the Central County Fire Department.
“We had a small kitchen fire that extended into the attic space. We were able to stop and contain the fire in the attic and no spread to neighboring apartments,” said Battalion Chief Casey Pera of Central County Fire.

Four fire trucks arrived at the scene on Highland near Peninsula Avenue, east of El Camino Real, to tackle the blaze. Chief Pera noted that the fire was called in as a two-alarm due to the extent of the spread in the attic, which required additional resources to ensure it was fully contained.
Fortunately, no one was inside the apartment where the fire started, and all residents were able to evacuate safely before firefighters arrived.

The fire was extinguished within 40 minutes of the firefighters’ arrival, but the building’s residents spent the day consulting with firefighters, police officers, and insurance appraisers due to smoke and water damage.
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. There were no reported injuries as a result of the fire.
