A Brooklyn resident was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison Thursday for fatally stabbing her mother more than 50 times and killing her mother’s dog, according to the Brooklyn district attorney’s office.
“It is heartbreaking that a mother lost her life so violently at the hands of her only child,” DA Eric Gonzalez said in a statement. “This tragedy has shattered a family and deeply affected her loved ones.”
On the evening of Jan. 19, 2024, police responded to multiple reports of a disturbance at 1500 Hornell Loop in Starrett City, according to the DA’s statement. There, officers found Donna Hyman, 58, dead in her apartment with stab wounds in her neck, chest, arms, back and head, prosecutors said.
Hyman’s dog Gigi was discovered outside the building. The dog had stabbed nearly three dozen times and thrown from the 11th-floor balcony, prosecutors said.
Authorities determined that Drea Eugene, who also lived there, had killed her mother and her mother’s dog “during a violent outburst,” according to prosecutors. Eugene, now 38, was later found outside the building naked and covered in blood, suffering from self-inflicted stab wounds and a dog bite, prosecutors said.
Eugene pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in September, according to the DA’s statement. Eugene’s defense attorney declined comment.
