Charles Cristiano, mayor of one of the towns affected by a Federal Highway Police operation that closed roads Sunday, said he believes the security officers’ action is an attempt at voter suppression. “It’s not normal. This has never happened on election day before,” said the mayor of Cuité, a town of 22,000 people in the interior of Paraíba.

“I think it is [an attempt at suppression]. Coincidentally, on election day, a blitz on the main access to the city? We are trying to get around it, calling people to come and vote, but unfortunately, many people are not voting. I think it will increase the number of abstentions,” Cristiano told The Post.
