WAKE COUNTY, N.C. (WTVD) — This may be the most adorable dating story you’ll ever hear.

9-year-old Gordon Dunsmore of Holly Springs is so obsessed with golden retrievers; he’s willing to spend his allowance just to play with one.

So, Gordon’s mom did something unusual to make her son’s dream come true.

Jennifer Dunsmore posted what she calls “a weird question” on two neighboring web pages in Holly Springs and Fuquay-Varina.

“My son is obsessed with golden retrievers,” she wrote, “he’d spend his allowance to meet one.” She didn’t have much hope for responses, “I thought it would be crickets.”

Well, she thought wrong.

“People responded so quickly”, Jennifer said smiling, “blasting photos of their adorable golden retrievers. I couldn’t keep up. I was also getting dms.” More than a hundred owners responded, offering Gordon playdates with their golden retrievers, no allowance needed!

“I was shocked at the response,” Jennifer said, “it was so sweet.”

Michelle Schwed is one of the owners who responded to Dunsmore’s post.

“I have grown up with golden retrievers,” Schwed explains, “they are super family dogs and when I saw the post I thought, I have a golden retriever I want to make someone’s day.”

Boy did Schwed make Gordon’s day with Teddy the golden retriever.

Gordon and Teddy played fetch and ran around the yard having a blast.

Schwed was excited to be a part of Gordon’s playdates. “Teddy loves to play,” Schwed beamed, “So I thought it you want to play with Teddy, run some energy out of him, cause he has a lot of it, I’m all for it.”

Gordon’s mom laughs “It’s like dating,” keeping up with all the dogs names and scheduling after the playdates started to pile up, expanding into Sanford and Lillington.

Gordon, a 4th grader at Thales Academy in Holly Springs, wants to meet all the dogs whose owners responded to his mom’s post.

“I’m super excited to meet them and pet them,” Gordon said. Gordon wants photos of all the dogs too so he can put them on his bedroom wall.

Gordon’s mom is now starting to understand her son’s obsession.

“I’m learning about the breed,” she said, “how they are unique. Sweet, happy, positive. That extends to their moms,” because of all the responses to her post. Jennifer believes golden retrievers are exactly what’s needed right now, “Happy, friendly, warm, nonjudgmental, never meet a stranger kind of energy.”

When Gordon finishes all of his doggy playdates, the family may consider getting Gordon a golden retriever of his own.
