Blue-Based Analogous Color Schemes

The color wheel contains primary (red, yellow, blue), secondary (orange, green, violet) and tertiary hues (blue-green, blue-violet, red-violet, red-orange, yellow-orange and yellow-green) colors. Plants in the tertiary hue realm can look different depending on which colors are in their immediate adjacency. For instance, a blue-green Hosta can look more blue when placed next to a green plant, and more green when placed by a blue plant. Blue-based analogous colors lend the landscape a lovely serene quality with their cool palettes:

  • Green – Calamint
  • Blue-Green Hosta “Tokudama Flavocircinalis”
  • Blue – Blue Fescue

  • Blue-Green – Hosta “Blue Mouse Ears”
  • Blue – Siberian Squill
  • Blue-Violet – Baptisia “Sparkling Sapphires”

  • Blue – Anemone “Blue Daisy”
  • Blue-Violet – Hydrangea macrophylla “Balimer” (Endless Summer)
  • Violet – Clematis “Ristimagi”

  • Blue-Violet – Lilac “President Lincoln”
  • Violet – Lavender “Hidcote Blue”
