Police Chief Kevin Davis said three people are dead and a fourth is in “grave” condition.

FAIRFAX, Va. — Police continue investigate a chaotic scene in Fairfax County that left three people dead and another person in “grave condition” Monday morning. Police Chief Kevin Davis described the scene as “unimaginable” in a press conference.

According to police, officers were called to the garden style apartment in the 3900 block of Persimmon Drive for a domestic disturbance around 5:15 a.m.

Davis said the police department received several 911 calls about the disturbance. According to Davis, the apartment was occupied by a man in his 50s, his wife, daughter and son-in-law as well as a 1-year-old baby.

The son-in-law was outside cleaning snow off his car when he heard a commotion inside the apartment. Davis said the son-in-law went inside after calling 911 to find his stabbed, and his father-in-law armed with a 10-inch curved dagger, which Davis described as a meat cleaver. The man had already killed his wife and daughter when the son-in-law entered the apartment, Davis said during a press conference.

“To describe this scene as bloody is an understatement,” Davis said. “The son-in-law rushed inside to find his father-in-law butchering his family.”

When officers arrived on scene, they entered the apartment to see the 50-year-old man stabbing his son-in-law. The officers gave multiple commands for the man to drop the knife, but he did not. Instead, he continued to stab his son-in-law, according to Davis.

An officer shot the man and killed him. Davis did not identify the officer who fired the shot, but described him as a young officer with a couple of years at the Fairfax County Police Department.

Davis said the officer discharged his firearm in an attempt to save lives.

“I saw the body-worn-camera footage and that officer did exactly what we expect him to do,” Davis said.

Investigators are still working to learn what led up to the violence inside the home.

“We don’t know what kind of strife was going on behind the four walls of this home,” Davis said “I can’t imagine anything would compel any human being to butcher his own family like he did today.”

As the investigation continues, Davis said there was no prior calls for service at the home and no law enforcement history with the family.

In total, the man, his wife and his daughter were killed. The son-in-law remains in the hospital. The baby is safe and unharmed. Davis said police are working to connect with other family members to keep the baby safe.
