Highlighting some of the committee’s concerns, Jordan and colleague Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) wrote, “It is unclear when the Department first came to learn about the existence of these documents, and whether it actively concealed this information from the public on the eve of the 2022 elections. It is also unclear what interactions, if any, the Department had with President Biden or his representatives about his mishandling of classified material.”

The committee made six requests for records, including communications “between or among the Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, or attorneys or representatives of President Biden.”

It also compared the Biden document discovery to Donald Trump’s document discovery—a tactic many GOP lawmakers have leaned on as they called Biden’s treatment compared to the Mar-a-Lago raid a “double standard.” The Congressmen wrote, “On August 8, 2022, despite the publicly available evidence of President Trump’s voluntary cooperation, you personally approved the decision to seek a warrant for excessive and unprecedented access to his private residence.” However, by all accounts, Trump did not demonstrate “voluntary cooperation,” as he refused to comply with a subpoena and resisted numerous inquiries by the National Archives.

Later on Friday, Jordan doubled down on his claims made in the letter to the attorney general, tweeting: “Hillary Clinton mishandled classified documents. Joe Biden mishandled classified documents. But the only one who gets his home raided is President Trump — and he didn’t even do anything wrong!”

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), another member of the House Judiciary Committee, tweeted asking about the now infamous scattered documents photo from Mar-a-Lago: “Just checking: Has the FBI sent out a photo of Biden’s classified documents scattered next to Joe’s Corvette?”

The letter concludes by asking for the attorney general to respond to all of the committee’s requests by January 27.
