Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) said its latest artificial intelligence (AI) model Ernie 3.5 surpassed OpenAI’s ChatGPT on several measures.
In beta testing, Ernie 3.5 surpassed ChatGPT (3.5) in comprehensive ability scores and outperforming GPT-4 in several Chinese language capabilities, the Chinese search giant noted citing the journal China Science Daily.
Baidu added that only three months after the beta release of Ernie Bot, its large language model (LLM) built on Ernie 3.0, Ernie 3.5 has achieved enhancements in efficacy, functionality and performance.
Ernie 3.5 boosts training throughput by two-fold and inference throughput by 17-fold compared to Ernie 3.0. These upgrades will accelerate the company’s model iteration upgrades, reduce training and usage costs, and improve user experience, according to Baidu.
One of the features has been plugins. The default built-in plugin ‘Baidu Search’ enables Ernie Bot to generate real-time and precise information. Another ChatFile plugin enables long text summary and Q&A, the company added.
The Ernie Bot will add more plugins from Baidu and third parties in the future.
Baidu is integrating Ernie Bot across several business lines and the company is also planning to establish a RMB 1B ($145M) venture capital fund to help start-ups focused on content generated by AI applications.
Chinese ecommerce giant Alibaba (BABA) (OTCPK:BABAF) is also building its latest AI system into its messaging app DingTalk and a meeting assistant called Tingwu.
Following the release of Microsoft (MSFT)-backed OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Chinese companies including Alibaba, SenseTime (OTCPK:SNTMF) and Baidu have launched their own generative AI services. According to a recent study, Chinese organizations have launched 79 LLMs in the past three years in an effort to boost their AI technology capabilities.
