At least 35 people are dead in Thailand after a gunman opened fire at a daycare before continuing the attack as he drove away in the deadliest mass shooting ever in the country, officials said Thursday.

The victims include at least 24 children and 11 adults, with the shooter allegedly killing his wife, child and himself.

The suspect has been identified by authorities as Panya Kamrap, a 34-year-old former police officer who was fired this year due to a drug-related cause.

He allegedly used a handgun to shoot through a locked door at the daycare, a witness told the local Kom Chad Leuk news station.

In this mug shot released by the Nong Bua Lamphu Provincial Public Relations Office, a suspected assailant is shown in the attack in the town of Nongbua Lamphu, northern Thailand, Oct. 6, 2022.

“The teacher who died, she had a child in her arms,” the unnamed witness said. “I didn’t think he would kill children, but he shot at the door and shot right through it.”
