ARGYLE, N.Y. (NEWS10) — New York State Police reported on Friday that an Argyle man was arrested last month following a pursuit with state troopers. Stephen Gillis, 59, is facing numerous charges.
On August 31, troopers tried to pull Gillis over after he was seen operating a dirt bike without a helmet just before 8:15 p.m. on Main Street in Argyle. Gillis allegedly refused to stop, resulting in a chase with State Police before he drove off the road and into a residential yard, out of the view of law enforcement.
Troopers continued patrolling the area and were able to find Gillis a short time later riding the dirt bike in a yard on Elm Street. The pursuit ended after Gillis collided with several bushes, resulting in him being taken into custody.
During the arrest, Gillis was reportedly found with felony amounts of narcotics and a glass smoking pipe. The Argyle man now faces the following charges:
- Three counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance
- Fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance
- Seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance
- Resisting arrest
- Third-degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle
- Several vehicle and traffic law violations
State Police later determined that Gillis didn’t have a valid driver’s license and that the dirt bike was unregistered and uninsured. He was held at the Washington County Jail ahead of his arraignment.
