Is The Iconic Burberry Trench Worth It?
You’ve probably seen or at least heard someone talk about the coveted Burberry trench coat. Which means you probably also know that it is VERY expensive. A few years ago, I bought this Burberry trench coat to put it to the test…
If you’re looking for more info on how trench coats can instantly elevate a look or five ways to wear a trench, make sure you check out those posts. They’re oldies but goodies and can give you some ideas on how you can potentially wear this versatile (yet expensive) piece.
Burberry Trench Coat Review
Burberry’s Chelsea Heritage Trench Coat
The Burberry trench I got is the Chelsea Heritage Slim-Fit. If you wear trench coats a lot and you want to invest in the highest quality trench coat possible, this is it! It’s flattering, feels amazing, and will keep you warm and dry in the rain! That may seem like a given, but actually, MANY trench coats are not waterproof or even water-resistant. Crazy, I know. I am SO glad I tried this iconic trench coat! The other super popular Burberry trench you might want to try is the Burberry Kensington in black or tan or their Waterloo trench coat. All of these coats have beautiful details like the straps around the arms and the buttons.
Comparing Burberry’s Chelsea Trench, Kensington Trench, and Westminster Trench Coats
Burberry creates 3 different regular-length, mid-length, and long trench coat silhouettes – the Chelsea trench coat, the Kensington trench coat, and the Westminster trench coat. It’s important to familiarize yourself with the 3 styles and what length you prefer if you’re considering purchasing this investment piece!
The Chelsea Heritage Trench
The Chelsea silhouette is the slimmest of Burberry’s 3 silhouettes. It has narrow shoulders and a nipped-in waist that will appear flared and tailored, even when leaving the coat open over your outfit. You might consider sizing up in this silhouette if you live in a cold climate and plan to layer sweaters under your trench. You can choose between long, mid, and short lengths for this style.
The Kensington Heritage Trench
The Kensington silhouette is Burberry’s classic-fit option. The coat is straight and streamlined, allowing for light layering underneath. It has a slightly tapered waist for a more modern feel, but won’t appear snug. You can choose between long, short, and mid length for this style as well.
The Waterloo Trench Coat
Burberry’s Waterloo trench is the most relaxed of their three silhouettes. It features all of the same qualities (water resistant, check print undercollar, storm shield, etc) as their other trench coats, but gives you the most room to layer a bulky sweater underneath. It only comes in the long length, which is something to consider.

Drumroll Please! My Honest Verdict Is…
This Burberry Trench is NOT Worth It!!
I’d say that if you have the money, know you’re going to wear it a ton, and you think it’s worth it…then go for it! It is a VERY luxe and beautiful wardrobe basic. But the price tag is hefty. It’s hard to make that jump when you know that you can get the same chic look at a much lower price. I have an old Veronica Beard trench (unfortunately sold out) that I still love so I decided to return the Burberry trench.
Know your budget and make sure to look at the other affordable trench coat options below to make your final decision! I am a BIG fan of the London Fog trench coats, which are also water-resistant and much less expensive. Read the product descriptions before buying your trench coat to make sure it’s water-resistant or waterproof.
Other Classic Trench Coat Alternatives to Burberry
Like I said, the Burberry trench is expensive. So, of course, I’m sharing some more affordable options too! These are some of the best trench coats at a lower price point!
