Amazon announced Wednesday it was pulling the plug on Amp, a live-audio app it released less than two years ago.
Amp, which launched in March 2022, was meant to introduce “a new version of radio” which allowed users to create their own live shows and have access to “a catalog of tens of millions of licensed songs” from record labels big and small.
The company also hired celebrities like Nicki Minaj to host shows on the platform.
Similar to Twitter Spaces, Clubhouse and Spotify Live — which also shut down this year after much initial fanfare — users could pick and choose which “callers” could chime in and become part of their show.
However, growth on the platform was reportedly much slower than expected and cuts had already been made.
“We’ve made the difficult decision to close Amp,” an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement, according to CNBC. “We learned a lot about how live music communities interact in the process, which we are bringing to bear as we build new fan experiences at scale in Amazon Music.”
