RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Republican House Speaker Destin Hall told fellow Representatives on Wednesday to not expect any more voting sessions for the rest of 2025. It comes despite the legislature not passing a final budget.
Hall said the plan could change, so lawmakers should keep certain dates open, but the chances of any voting sessions are slim.
On Wednesday, as Representatives were in session to vote on a GOP-drawn Congressional map that looks to get one more Republican in Congress, Democrats said they should have been working on a budget instead.
“Your state legislature does not have to be an utter mess,” Democratic Representative Phil Rubin said. “You deserve a legislature that works together on driving down the highest healthcare costs in the country, you deserve one that funds your schools, you deserve a budget that gets passed.”
Republican House Speaker Destin Hall said the state has gone longer without a budget before. He also said the House remains willing to negotiate with the Senate.
“At this stage, I think we’ve taken up largely the things that are time sensitive and critical matters that we needed to deal with in mini budgets and there’s not much left in that vein,” Speaker Hall said. “What’s left are the things that are still really important, like state employees, teacher salaries, salaries for law enforcement, and again, we don’t have agreement on those things.”
A spokesperson with Senator Phil Berger, the Republican leader in the Senate, said the Senate also doesn’t anticipate any more votes in 2025.
