After a gunman shot two people near an East Hollywood apartment complex on Sunday, police surrounded the suspect’s home. An hours-long standoff ended when SWAT team members stormed the residence — only to find it empty, authorities said.

Los Angeles Police Department officers responded at 1:49 p.m. to a shooting in the 1500 block of Serrano Avenue, which is between Sunset and Hollywood boulevards, said Officer Rosario Cervantes, a police spokesperson.

Two men were taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds. Both were in stable condition as of Sunday evening.

In a post on X, the social media site formerly called Twitter, LAPD officials wrote that the shooting erupted during a dispute between neighbors. Believing the gunman had retreated inside his home, officers surrounded it, evacuated nearby residents and closed Serrano Avenue to motorists.

SWAT negotiators and officers from the LAPD’s Mental Health Unit tried to contact the suspect without success. When SWAT team members forced their way into his home, they found he wasn’t there, according to the LAPD.

Officers seized a gun inside the home that was suspected of being used in the shooting. Police were still searching Sunday night for the suspect, who hasn’t been identified.

Around 8 p.m., police began allowing residents to return to their homes on Serrano Avenue and reopened the street to car traffic.
