After four years of construction, Manhattan opened its first public beach along the Hudson River on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2023. Gansevoort Peninsula in Hudson River Park, which used to be a depot for the Department of Sanitation, now features a public beach, sports field, beachfront landing for non-motorized boats and 20 million oysters. Officials urge people not to jump in the water, however.
