Adorned Brooklyn grandfather dies more than two weeks after driver runs him down, no charges brought

A beloved Brooklyn grandfather struck in a crosswalk by a driver backing her car up died more than two weeks after the collision, with no charges brought against the woman behind the wheel, police said.

Moses Parnes, 71, passed away this past Thursday at Maimonides Medical Center after hitting his head on the pavement when hit in a Borough Park crosswalk back on July 24, police said.

“He loved his kids and his grandkids,” said the victim’s son Usher Parnes to the Daily News. “Even if you go to the bank, they would know my father. They would always say, ‘He’s a really good man’ … He was truly a people’s person.”

The NYPD said there were no arrests or charges in the fatal incident, although the death remained under investigation by the Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.

According to police, the 39-year-old woman was behind the wheel of a 2011 Lexus R35 on East 10th St. when she stopped to put the car in reverse as the senior citizen crossed the street with the right of way.

Usher Parnes said the car hit his father in the ribs and knocked him over, with the victim’s head slamming on the street as he tumbled. The family was unaware of what happened until contacted two days after the accident by hospital officials.

“He was brain dead when the hospital received him,” recalled the son. “The hospital claimed they could not locate the family.”

The elder Parnes was still working as a salesman, selling accessories for grocery stores, his son recalled. And he was buried alongside his ex-wife, who died of cancer.

“My parents were married for 18 years and then got divorced,” said the son. “But they still loved each other. My father is buried next to her now.”
