From the storyline of Leo Tolstoy’s Sergei Ivanovich character in “Anna Karenina,” to the rampant hedonism of Woodstock, to the excesses of the 1990s’ rave scene, shrooms have occupied a unique place in popular culture and have become emblematic of a “hippie trippy” lifestyle choice.
