Virginia boy who shot teacher said: ‘I shot that b—h dead’

The 6-year-old boy who shot and wounded his teacher at a Virginia elementary school told a witness, “I shot that b—h dead,” according to court documents unsealed Monday.

Abby Zwerner, the 25-year-old teacher who was wounded at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News on Jan. 6, survived her injuries. She resigned in June.

The boy has not been publicly identified and will not be charged with a crime. His mother, Deja Taylor, reached plea deals surrounding state and federal charges in the case.

According to police documents, Zwerner’s class had returned from recess and been split into reading groups in the minutes before the shooting, local ABC affiliate WRIC reported.

During recess, school staffer Amy Kovac and a school administrator had searched the child’s backpack after other students told them he had a gun, according to local CBS affiliate WTKR. However, the adults could not find the gun in the bag.

Zwerner told police that while other students were reading, the 6-year-old boy pulled the gun from his backpack and shot her one time, WTKR reported. She was wounded in her hand and chest.

Kovac was standing outside, heard the gunshot and rushed into the room to temporarily corral the 6-year-old shooter, she told police. During that time, the child told her “I shot that b—h dead,” “I did it” and “I got my mom’s gun last night,” according to police documents.

During the boy’s short time in Newport News Public Schools, he had been disciplined several times for various incidents, WRIC reported. A former kindergarten teacher said the child once tried to choke her.

Taylor, the boy’s mother, said in May that her son had been diagnosed with ADHD.
