Every fictional spy has a few signature traits they are notoriously known for, like James Bond’s smooth style or the death-defying direction Ethan Hunt usually takes on missions. But when it comes to the head of Slough House, Jackson Lamb’s reputation isn’t exactly glowing, and the untidy agent really doesn’t fit the bill as the international man of mystery fans would usually root for, let alone stick around to watch. But those key differences and disdain are exactly what drew the show’s main star in. “The series is based on these books by Mick Herron, and I felt that not only the world but the creation of Lamb was fantastic,” Gary Oldman said in a Looper exclusive. “It’s really like nothing I’d ever read, and I thought, ‘Well, I don’t know if I really like the character,’ but I thought I would like playing him. I’d have a lot of fun with him.”
There is no denying he enjoys several facets of the sloppy, ill-mannered persona, including the cheeky dialogue. “I’ll go through the script and I’ll have a real corker of a line, and I always think,” the actor said in an interview with the LA Times. “‘Oh, that’s such a great moment. I can’t wait to see the expression on their faces when I give them the zinger.’”
It seems critics and fans aren’t the only ones entertained by Lamb’s antics, as the man behind the surly spy is also having a blast bringing the unlikely expert in espionage to life in every episode of “Slow Horses” available on Apple TV+.
