The Los Angeles Police Department was investigating the stabbing of two students Monday afternoon near Los Angeles High School, agency officials said.
Two 16-year-olds were stabbed near the intersection of Olympic and Rimpau boulevards around 4:20 p.m.
The violence “was the result of an on-campus dispute,” the LAPD said in a statement.
School police had been near the campus until shortly before the stabbings occurred as part of the “safe passage” program, which provides patrols before and after school, L.A. School Police Department officials said. Units left the school to respond to a report that a gun had been found at another campus.
Following the attacks, the injured students were taken to a hospital, both in stable condition.
LAPD and Los Angeles School Police blocked the roadway in the area along the school’s southwest corner for their investigation.
School district police did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Times.
Los Angeles High School has a rich history in L.A. Unified. It sits at the southern end of Hancock Park, one of the wealthiest enclaves in Los Angeles, although most of its students are not residents of the affluent area.
In a statement posted to Twitter, Supt. Alberto Carvalho called the attacks “senseless.”
“All of our students deserve to go to school free of fear and full of hope,” Carvalho said. “We must work together to continue to provide safe passages to and from school.”
