Readers sound off on re-electing Biden, being woke and Joel Osteen’s animal sermons

Manhattan: I am a 21-year-old woman living in NYC. As someone who is very politically active and on the left side of the political spectrum, President Biden’s reelection bid is very scary to me. It is not because he is old, it’s because of his failure to act on gun control (I know he doesn’t have complete power in this regard but he could do much more) and climate issues, including his approving oil drilling and not standing with climate activists.

I did not love Biden but voted for him, and was excited to have a Democrat as president. Though I feel that Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis are awful people and would implement awful policies, I feel extremely hesitant to vote for Biden. It goes against my morals to vote for someone who is investing in policies that will cause massive harm to Americans and global citizens. I understand the importance of voting but I am sick of sacrificing my morals to vote for someone just so the mildly worse candidate doesn’t win. I may not vote if Biden is the only option.

The one form of advertising that is not extremely costly and actually communicates to voters (the Democratic primary) is being stripped from us. My roommates agree, and are indicative of other young voters who are to the left or moderate. I have become extremely disheartened by the Democratic Party and this has solidified my distaste for the all-around corruption. Forcing Biden’s reelection bid on us has ruined my remaining faith that the U.S. can do any semblance of good for its citizens and the world. Amy Campbell-Oates

Bayside: A Voicer recently said that President Biden is old. I say this: Just because there’s snow on the roof, it doesn’t mean the fire is out in the basement. Young people have no concept of reality. Even with 10 years of college, they wouldn’t learn wisdom, which is only achieved through many years of life. Sarah Alboher

Commack, L.I.: God forbid this feckless buffoon gets to finish the job. The soul of America is rotting under this administration and only head-in-the-sand lemmings like yourselves would yearn for even more. Also, no AI is needed to view the horrible conditions at our border. All you need to do is open your eyes. Literally. Gary Kaelin

Kings Park, L.I.: I have always had difficulty understanding, with all we now know and might find out, why Donald Trump is still supported by nearly 1/3 of potential voters. Well, I did my research. The states with the most educated people (bachelor’s degrees or higher) are blue states. The states with the least educated people (high school dropouts) are red states. I don’t think that is a coincidence. John Karahalis

Bronx: It is beyond my understanding that there are people out there who consider guns to be more important than our children. Unfortunately, these are the people who are in a position to do something about it but refuse to because of an obstinate obsession with firearms. They are dangerous because they enable the criminals, which makes them almost as guilty. They like to use the excuse of the Second Amendment, but just as with the First Amendment, they choose to abuse it. Ignorance breeds ignorance until it becomes a cause — sadly, at the expense of the innocent. Don’t be fooled by ignorance, which always speaks the loudest, but be guided by logic, common sense and compassion. Antonia Cruz

Staten Island: To Voicer Victor R. Stanwick: Your assumption that I am of the white race is proof that you are the racist one here, not I. You assumed my thoughts and words were an indication of prejudicial comments. They were not. It was an observation — nothing more, nothing less. The Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben rebranding, in my opinion, are just examples of folks being way too damn woke. Myra Goodman

Copiague, L.I.: I see that people are still making themselves and each other crazy about what the word “woke” could possibly mean. Well, woke is a slang term coming out of a particular community, and so there are nuances not everyone will pick up on. But it is really very simple. The meaning falls somewhere between two poles. One is spiritual: “to be enlightened,” and the other is worldly: “to be wised up.” Being wised up doesn’t make you a wise guy, but it does mean having no illusions that your local wise guys are good guys or that we live in a PG world. Of course, MAGA men use the term because they’re no longer allowed to use the one that starts with an “N” and ends with “lover.” Mitch Kessler

Bloomington, Ind.: Many intelligent folks I know surprise me with their irrational and extreme political views. It’s especially baffling coming from those who appear to be highly educated with advanced degrees from prestigious universities. It’s intimidating to take them to task with a discussion of my concerns. They are masterful at defending these absurd notions. However, they typically avoid nuanced dialog, resorting instead to robotic platitudes. That extra gray matter does little to dislodge the nonsensical positions the far left so rigidly embraces. It has become apparent to me over the years that when you’re debating someone about any issue, you don’t have to be as smart as they are if you’re right. Scott Thompson

Omaha: Re “Mr. Mayor: Ditch the RoboCops” (op-ed, April 14): Albert Fox Cahn, RoboCop was designed to protect law enforcement and the innocent, not the criminal. Tom Dahulick

Suffern, N.Y.: You condemn Mayor Adams for talking about his faith, then you play up Al Sharpton (“Al’s justice connection,” April 2). Sharpton runs a cult centered around worship of himself, racial agitation and hatred of police, not God. Wallington M. Simpson

Manhattan: TV pastor Joel Osteen’s sermon last week espoused the importance of perseverance. To illustrate, Osteen chose to gleefully describe a particularly cruel and pointless experiment where researchers put food just out of reach of starving animals. When an animal reached the food, the disgraceful researchers threw ice water on him. Osteen himself has never spoken humanely about animals, choosing instead to insult and demean them, misinterpreting the Bible repeatedly or sometimes just displaying his own ignorant, uneducated contempt for animals. Why not be a good example of living harmoniously with all who share this Earth? Osteen should understand that people now realize animals are sentient and why we should treat them with kindness and understanding and that we reject his biased callousness. The Bible says, “The righteous care for animals,” Mr. Osteen. Please include the animals — beings who have no voice — in your circle of compassion. It’s what Jesus would do. Grace Luntz

Bronx: For many moons, the Daily News has been missing content. The front pages could use an uplifting facelift by including a fair share of good news to balance all the bad news. And the sports section is also lacking. High school and college baseball is in full swing, so why not report on that? Horse racing news is sadly missing, especially the run-up to the Derby and Triple Crown. So, giddy up there, Daily News. You can do better. Denis Buckley

Manhattan: When TV and movie shoots or construction crews have cars towed on the Upper West Side, they leave them in front of fire pumps or dump them at an intersection, which is understandable with the lack of parking spaces but is dangerous and inconsiderate as well. This can’t happen but it does all of the time around here! The solution is simple: The company that called for the tow gets fined at least 10 times the amount of the fine for the car, and the towing company gets the same fine and a loss of their towing license. Leonard P. Daniels
