Bill Maher proposes new holiday for atheists

Bill Maher has proposed a holiday for atheists in the name of inclusivity.

“Atheists, we’re approaching a third of the population here. I shouldn’t have to beg for this for God sakes,” Maher quipped. “It’s outrageous. There are this many of us and there is still zero representation in government.”

The 67-year-old television personality made the remarks during Friday’s episode of “Real Time,” just days before Palm Sunday, which kicks off the one of the holiest weeks on the Christian calendar.

Maher argued the religiously unaffiliated should too be granted a day off to “recommit ourselves to observable reality,” adding that people should not be shamed for opting out of organized religion.

Maher went on to reference politicians who “only sheepishly admit they’re religiously unaffiliated.” He specifically mentioned former President Barack Obama, who defines his spirituality as “secular humanism.”

The television host also pointed out the slew of days off set aside for other religions, including the increasing number of schools observing Ramadan.

An estimated 3 million people celebrate Ramadan, he says, but 100 million identify as atheists.

“Where the f— is our day?” Maher asked. “One day with no atonement, no corpse reanimation, no fasting, no tree in your house, no rock to circle, no dirt on your forehead, no candles to light — and please, god, no fruitcake.”

Maher, who has long scoffed at religion, emphasized that if diversity and inclusion are among the county’s goals, atheist should not be excluded from the conversation.

“Next Sunday is Easter. Enjoy,” he continued. “Bunny rabbits that s— eggs to celebrate the son of God? Whatever floats your ark.”
