This was her first visit with the Guards since being named Colonel of the Regiment.

The Princess was named to the honorary role last December, assuming the position from the Prince of Wales as he became Colonel of the Welsh Guards. 

The training was in Wiltshire, roughly 90 minutes from Windsor.

Kate began her visit to the training area in Salisbury Plain by meeting the Irish Guards of Number One and Number Two Company to hear about their recent deployment on Security Force Assistance tasks across East Africa. There, they have been training and helping other forces including aiding park rangers on counter-poaching missions.

During freezing temperatures and heavy snow, the princess met with army personnel and watched several training sessions during Wednesday’s visit. The exercises included casualty assistance and de-mining training which is currently being delivered by the Irish Guards to Ukrainian armed forces.

 

The Princess learned about treating wounds in the field, participating in a casualty exercise. 

 

Crouching in the snow, she held the soldier’s leg as she was shown how to wrap the wound and check the casualty’s vital signs during basic battlefield first aid training.

As she placed a tourniquet – used to stop heavy bleeding – on his calf, the Princess apologised and said: ‘It’s the first time I’ve done this’.

Lance Corporal Jodie Newell, 25, who was in charge of teaching the Princess first aid, said: ‘I was so nervous – I’m teaching the Princess of Wales med [medicine] – it was an honour.

‘We were just showing her what we medics do in the Army. She was actually really good, really eager to take part.’ L/Cpl Newell added that Kate took it ‘all in her stride, like she has done it before’ and that it was ‘amazing’ to have her visit the training area, particularly on International Women’s Day.

Afterwards the Princess said that taking part in military first aid exercises brought the realities of their training ‘to life’.

She said that the battlefield casualty drills, complete with fake gun fire and explosions, ‘just brought it all to life’.

 

She asked whether a lot of the training was around “education and building better relationships in their communities,” to which the soldier responded that their focus was to help the locals “take ownership of their training”.

 

The Telegraph story notes the Princess “… spent time asking the soldiers questions about their demonstrations and training.” 

 

Lieutenant Colonel Aldridge said his battalion was delighted to welcome Kate to Salisbury Plain for her first visit as Royal Colonel.

He said: “It is particularly fitting on International Women’s Day that a few of our female soldiers met such an inspiring female role model.

“It is a real honour for all the guardsmen to meet their Royal Colonel in the field here on Salisbury Plain and demonstrate a few of our basic operational skills.”

Now for our look at what Kate wore for today’s engagement. 

 

She was in a standard issue British Army Windproof Smock (Jacket), with thanks to Carly at Kate Middleton Style for info on the piece. Her insignia identify her rank of colonel.

The jacket features multiple bellows pockets on the front, a full-length front zipper with storm flap, an interior drawstring at the waist, and many other features you would expect from functional military wear.

 

With thanks to Middleton Maven for a great ID, it looks like the Princess wore Holland Cooper’s Astoria Rollneck Sweater (£149, about $175 at today’s exchange rates). The sweater is made of a nylon/acrylic/wool/alpaca/elastane bend. 

It features cable detailing, raglan sleeves, ribbing at the neck, cuffs, and hem, and branded horn buttons at the shoulder and cuff.

 

The Princess looked like she had on the G-Star Raw High G-Shape Cargo Skinny Pants ($120, out of stock) first noted in Belize last March. The trousers are a high-waist style made in the brand’s Bracket Superstretch Twill, with a zip front, thigh pockets with flap and hidden snap closures, and a single zipper pocket on the back.

 

 

The Princess’s hat is not yet identified.

 

Nor her gloves. 

 

Nor the earrings, a very small gold hoop.
