Unlike most twins, these New Year’s newborns won’t have to share birthdates, or even birth years, as they grow up – one baby girl was born on New Year’s Eve and her sister arrived a few minutes later on New Year’s Day.
Annie Jo Scott was born at 11:55 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2022a at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton and her twin, Effie Rose Scott, was born at 12:01 a.m., on Jan. 1, 2023. The babies, both weighing about 5.5 pounds, were the last born in 2022 and the first born in 2023, the hospital said.
Kali Scott, who is 37, had been meeting with her doctor weekly as a January 10 date for a Cesarean birth approached. But she had been more concerned the fraternal twins might arrive over Christmas weekend. “I didn’t even consider New Year’s Eve,” Kali Scott said.

But on Dec. 29 her blood pressure was “a little high,” she said. So, her physician “wanted me to come in to the hospital for more monitoring,” Scott said.
Then, “our doctor decided that they really needed to come on Saturday, and then Saturday kind of turned into Sunday morning,” she said.
The new parents think the twins having different birth dates could help each child’s individuality. “When we heard we were having twins I wanted to make sure that they had more of a personality outside of just being known as ‘the twins,’ … that people didn’t just peg them into those roles too much,” Kali Scott said. “I was really focused on how we can make sure that they’re being individuals and not dressing them alike and fostering their creativity individually.”
Separate birthdays hadn’t been a consideration. “You just take for granted that they’re going to be born on the same day, much less the same year,” she said. “So I’m actually very excited about this. I am really excited that it gives them just a little bit added individualism to their story into their life. It’s one less thing they have to share.”

The medical team had referred to the twins as “Twin A” and “Twin B,” so it made sense that Twin A would be named Annie, a name the parents got from Cliff’s mother’s name of Ann. Jo is Kali’s middle name, as well as her grandmother’s. Effie Rose shares a middle name with Kali’s mother. “We kind of made some riffs off of some family names,” Kali Scott said.
Since the twins’ arrival, the Scotts’ story has been covered on local TV and in local newspapers, as well by Good Morning America and People magazine.
Life has been “kind of a rollercoaster” for the Scotts since learning they were having twins, said Cliff Scott, who is 38. An electrician, Cliff could not make it to a May 2022 appointment when Kali, a communications specialist, had a checkup.
“Yeah, I told him don’t bother coming to that very first appointment. We know I’m pregnant. Nothing important will be learned here,” Kali Scott said.
Then, she called him on FaceTime during the ultrasound. “She showed me the picture on the screen and I was like, ‘Oh, that’s so cute. That’s so great.’ And then she was like, ‘There’s two in there’,” he said. “That’s exactly when the rollercoaster started.”
For their two newborns, the ride has just begun.
